Isambane is the Zulu word for Aardvark, an animal as unique as our management style. We passionately believe in sustainable travel and tourism, good food, great friends, long talks, broadened horizons and, of course, an adventurous spirit. We maintain the belief that the world would be a better place if everyone spent more time in nature’s magnificence.
The story begins with the need to secure a future for the amazing wildlife, diverse cultures and incredible people living in and around Isambane. Our top priority is conserving the very land on which all of this depends. Our model is based on sustainability and therefore we have opted to keep our camp small and intimate. Isambane’s contribution is targeted at forging important socio-economic links, improving communities and building a brighter future for the next generation. By achieving our goals, we strive to be a part of the African heritage worth protecting.
We strive to restore, improve and protect the biodiversity of the ecosystems under our care to ensure they are functioning as close as possible to their natural, undisturbed state.
In order to stimulate the development of our staff and contribute to furthering our understanding of the natural environment, numerous research projects are undertaken on an annual basis. These include monitoring migratory bird species and recording the wealth of biodiversity occurring within and around Isambane.
We believe that education is an integral part of wildlife conservation and the first step towards a better future. As part of our guided experience, we aim to cultivate a love for nature in all of our guests, no matter their background.
All our sales are based on a giving back policy. Proceeds from our curio shop will provide for families and help toward the upliftment of the surrounding communities.
At Isambane, we rely on our Sun's energy to provide all power and electricity, and as a result our camp is 100% solar powered. To be as sustainable as possible we use on-site reverse osmosis filtration to produce high-quality drinking water, reducing plastic usage.
During construction the conservation of nature was prioritised, ensuring no destruction of our flora or fauna. Rather than mould the environment to our needs, our campsites were carefully selected and as a result no trees were removed.
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
- Chris Maser
